Shaw Theatres has officially returned to Singapore's western half with a brand-new 10-screen cineplex at JEM, reopening its doors on 27 June 2026 and bringing the latest in cinema technology back to Jurong East after a three-year absence. The new outlet replaces the former Cathay Cineplexes that closed in March 2025, and it marks Shaw's eighth cineplex islandwide, the operator's first in the West since its JCube location shuttered in 2023 when the mall closed for redevelopment.
A Hall Line-Up Built for the West
The 10-hall line-up is purpose-built for variety. At the headline end is the IMAX Hall, Shaw's fifth IMAX in Singapore, fitted with next-generation laser projection and a tuned sound system engineered for the immersive, large-format format that the brand has become known for at Lido and Waterway Point. For families, the Dreamers Hall reimagines the moviegoing experience for parents with young children: softer lighting, gentler sound levels, bean-bag seating scattered loosely enough for families to pile in together, and, in a Singapore first, a playground structure built directly into the hall. Three rope towers connected by rope tunnels let children climb before and during the show, with a long red slide dropping them into a ball pit below. The open-rope design keeps sightlines clear to the screen so kids stay visually connected to the film while parents supervise from their seats. Anti-slip socks are required for anyone entering the play structure.
Premiere and Centro: A New Dining Dimension
For moviegoers chasing a premium experience, two Premiere halls offer an intimate, boutique-style setting with premium in-theatre dining and butler service, alongside a dedicated lounge area. The Premiere experience is paired with the newly opened Centro Gelato & Dessert Bar, which is open to the public, ticket or no ticket, daily from 10am to 10pm. Patrons can enjoy gelato and desserts dine-in, on-the-go, or carried straight into a Premiere screening, making JEM the second location after Shaw Lido to offer the combined dining-and-movie concept.
A Return to Jurong East
Shaw Theatres has deep roots in Jurong East, having operated at the old Jurong Entertainment Centre and later at JCube. "Shaw Theatres has always had a presence in Jurong East, from Jurong Entertainment Centre and JCube to now JEM," the operator noted in its opening statement. The regular halls at JEM began operating in November 2025, with the IMAX and Dreamers halls, Premiere lounge, and Centro dessert bar opening progressively over the past two months ahead of the 27 June 2026 grand opening. For western-dwelling cinema fans, the commute to Orchard for an IMAX or Premiere experience is finally optional again.
